Read on to understand more.

  • Evaluate the Question

Writing a good essay starts right from understanding the topic. Maybe your professor has already given you the subject, or you have selected the topic on your own. The question is, do you understand what the question requires you to do? Is it an argumentative essay, an expository, a narrative, or a descriptive essay? If, as a student, you fail to evaluate what the question needs you to do, you might end up writing ideas out of context. This will imply that you cannot follow the basic instructions. Even if you have the best points in the essay, but it is out of context, be sure to fail. So, start by understanding the topic first.

  • Write the Topic Sentence

If you understand what the lecturer wants you to write from the topic, it is about time you write the topic sentence. It can be a paragraph or a thesis statement. It all depends on the nature of the question and the directions from the teacher. While writing the topic sentence, ensure you include ideas from the main topic.

For instance, if the topic is “Causes of Obesity,” the thesis or the topic sentence should be “Poor exercising, improper eating habits, and hereditary factors contribute to obesity.”

  • Outline a response

After you have accomplished the two steps above, you now need to map the response as you focus on the ideas supporting the causes of obesity. Remember, this is a rough draft, and you don’t need to be accurate. Taking the example above, you can include points like poor timings, eating junk, and excess intake of calories in the case of improper eating habits. These phrases are meant to support the main point. Go further and give examples of junk foods that contribute to obesity.

  • Fill the outline with complete sentences

At this point, you have all the relevant information relating to information. In your rough outline, make whole sentences to complete the concept. Use appropriate transition words like first, second, then, next, finally, among others. Such phrases help the ideas flow straightforwardly. Ensure you discuss all the causes you had previously highlighted. The idea is to give you a smooth experience when writing the final essay.

After discussing all the causes, draft the introduction paragraph. At this point, you have started writing the final draft.

  • Create a Catchy Sentence

Since you have started writing the main essay, come up with a sentence that will keep the reader glued to your paper till the end. It can be a statement that makes the reader curious to know what follows. Again, it can be a question prompting the tutor to read ahead to find answers.

  • Fill in your supporting ideas & create a conclusion

You have the attention of the reader. Now start putting down your ideas in a flowing manner. Explain each point as you give the supporting evidence and examples. Keep the sentences readable and use friendly words for an easy understanding.

Finally, write the conclusion, summarizing all the ideas you have discussed in your paper. You can as well give your viewpoint as you close your essay.
